SUMMARY:Finding Joy In Your Writing: In The Time of Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:We’ll gather in the California Writers Circle in Joaquin Miller Park to hear Nazelah Jamison’s presentation “Finding Joy in the Time of the Apocalypse.”\nThe world seems to be ending: wanna-be dictators are being elected\, the planet is heating up and glaciers are melting\, the number of natural disasters is at an all-time high\, and our enemies seem to be joining and actively conspiring against us. In a time when internal and global conflict is more prevalent than ever\, how does a writer still find actual joy in writing? From changing paths to changing direction\, Nazelah Jamison invites you to seek\, and find\, the joy.\n\nAbout Nazelah Jamison:Nazelah Jamison is a Bay Area-based performance poet\, author\, comedian\, vocalist and emcee. Her first book of poetry\, Evolutionary Heart\, was released on Nomadic Press in 2016\, and reprinted and re-released on Black Lawrence Press in Fall 2023. Her work can also be found in The Racket Journal: Issue Fifteen (2020)\, Culture Counts Magazine (2021)\, La Raiz Magazine (2022)\, Better Ancestors\, Sparkle + Blink 115 (Quiet Lightning 2022) and The Town: An Anthology of Oakland Poets (Nomadic Press\, 2023). In her spare time\, Nazelah enjoys writing horror screenplays and saving the day. She hosts Thee Virtual Open Mic every 1st & 3rd Friday on Zoom\, and gives the best hugs in the Bay Area.

SUMMARY:CWC-Berkeley's September Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:BUY YOUR TICKET NOW!https://bit.ly/cwcspeakerseries\nThe Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club is excited to welcome Carole Stivers for our September Speaker Series event!\nWhen scientist Carole Stivers began writing science fiction\, she dreamed of readers she’d never met\, enjoying and discussing her work. But she also dreamed of acceptance in “literary circles.” She secured an agent unfamiliar with sci-fi who saw cross-over potential for her debut novel\, The Mother Code. What happened next was a crash course in the impact of genre classification on book marketing.\nCarole will tell you what she wished she had known before embarking on the ever-shifting seas of literary genre\, and offer tips on how you might keep your own head above water when “writing outside the lines.”\nAbout Carole Stivers\nBorn in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Carole Stivers received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She went on to post-doctoral work at Stanford University before launching a 30-year career in medical diagnostics.\nShe now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where she’s combined her love of writing and her fascination with the possibilities of science to create science fiction.\nHer debut novel\, The Mother Code\, was launched in 2020 to rave reviews\, including a Publishers Weekly starred review and a nomination for the 2020 Goodreads Choice Award in Science Fiction. It was sold to 15 foreign publishers\, and the U.S. paperback was released in 2021.\nWebsite: Carole StiversFacebook: Carole Stivers AuthorLinkedIn: Carole Stivers – Author – Penguin Random House | LinkedInAmazon: Carole Stivers: books\, biography\, latest update\nLocation: Block Community Hub (1955 Broadway\, Downtown Oakland)SCHEDULE12:30 PM: Doors Open1:00 PM: Board Announcements1:30 PM: Member Spotlight1:45 PM: Carole Stivers3:00: Author Support Group\nBUY YOUR TICKET NOW!https://bit.ly/cwcspeakerseries
