In a time when internal and global conflict is more prevalent than ever\, how does a writer still find actual joy in writing? From changing paths to changing direction\, Nazelah Jamison invites you to seek\, and find\, the joy.\n\nAbout Nazelah Jamison:Nazelah Jamison is a Bay Area-based performance poet\, author\, comedian\, vocalist and emcee. Her first book of poetry\, Evolutionary Heart\, was released on Nomadic Press in 2016\, and reprinted and re-released on Black Lawrence Press in Fall 2023. Her work can also be found in The Racket Journal: Issue Fifteen (2020)\, Culture Counts Magazine (2021)\, La Raiz Magazine (2022)\, Better Ancestors\, Sparkle + Blink 115 (Quiet Lightning 2022) and The Town: An Anthology of Oakland Poets (Nomadic Press\, 2023). DESCRIPTION:Come out to Clarion Performing Arts Center to hear the masterful poetry of Lauren Parker\, Kimi Sugioka\, and Keith Gaboury.\nLauren Parker is a fourth generation female breadwinner descended from male charlatans\, and thus has grown up to become a very educated liar. She is a writer\, zine maker\, and visual artist and has written for the Toast\, Strange Horizons\, The Racket\, Xtra Magazine\, Catapult\, and Autostraddle. She’s the author of the poetry collection We Are Now the Thing in the Woods (Bottlecap Press\, 2023)\, Dark Way Down (Animal Heart Press\, 2025)\, and Spells for Success (Simon Element\, 2025).\nKimi Sugioka is a mother\, educator\, songwriter and poet. She earned an MFA from Naropa University and has published two books of poetry\, the newest of which is Wile & Wing (Manic D Press). She has been published in numerous anthologies and is currently the poet laureate of nearby Alameda. As an active board member for literary arts organizations\, Kimi curates and hosts readings in Alameda and San Francisco. She believes that creating community through art is a revolutionary act.\nKeith Gaboury earned a MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College. His poems have appeared in such literary publications as Poetry Quarterly\, New Millennium Writings\, and the San Francisco Public Library’s Poem of the Day Series. Kelsay Books published The Cosmos is Alive in 2023\, and Falkenberg Press published Still Human in 2025. He’s also a preschool teacher\, a proud bibliophile\, and the president of the Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club. Keith lives in Oakland\, California.\n

As commenters\, let’s remember to trust that the author has absorbed the feedback and will use it as they see fit. We want to share comments that help the writer find places of refinement and/or growth within the poem. \n

Avoiding phrases like “you need to” and “you should” in exchange for “I noticed” or “your use of” can go a long way in shaping more helpful comments. For example\, “You should never use passive voice in first person…” is a general statement disconnected from the poem. Whereas “It wasn’t clear to me in the 3rd stanza if the monkeys escaped with you or only wanted to” alerts the author to a possible ambiguity in the piece.\nSome useful feedback sentence starters are:

Using Google Docs is a two-step process. First upload the document and secondly change the Share to “Anyone with the link.” The allows for folks to view and comment directly on the doc itself. This is a persistent state. Meaning it continues to be available in this way. So we recommend that after the session\, change the permissions back to “owner” so no one will have access to the poem other than yourself. Going a step further you can download the document with comments to your computer and remove it from Google Docs. If you use Google Docs\, it makes sense to simply reset the permissions. \nBelow is the link to the Google Docs homepage.
